Song Choice

We chose the song ‘Hold Back the River’, by James Bay, due to the strong imagery it presented. As we decided we wanted a solely narrative based video (as opposed to including live action); having a clear storyline, one that would capture our audience’s attention, was of vital importance. We also chose the song based on the variety it offered. We thought the sudden changes in pace would create a less stable structure for the video and therefore intrigue our audience more, as the video would be less predictable. We also knew it would help us at the editing stage, as the layers of the song (the gradual addition of different instruments) and changes in tempo meant that we would have clear markers of when one shot needs to end and the next start.

Our Task

In preparation for A2 coursework we have been given a trial effort over the next month to produce an original music video, and accompanying original CD cover for the release of the song. I will be working with Matt Rennie and Natalie Paul. As you’ll see we were given a selection of songs to choose from, from which we chose James Bay ‘Hold Back the River’. Likewise, we were given 2 conditions to use when making our video, and a list of possible stimuli.
